How large

should the Paging File Be? This is among the most common questions. The size of the Paging File should be approximately 1.5x (one and one-half times) your installed ram. That is, if you have 512 meg of ram, then the page file should be approximately 768 meg.

Should you let Windows manage the paging file or manage it yourself? You should manage it yourself. If windows manages it, it is "dynamic". That means it will expand and contract as windows sees fit. This will cause fragmentation of the page file and ultimately it will be less efficient than it should be. To optimize the efficiency of the page file, set both the Minmimum AND Maximum settings to the appropriate size (in the above example, both would be set for 768). This "static" setting will minimize fragmentation of the page file.
